Question 1

What is the difference between a CDC and a Seaman Book?

Accepted Answer

In most cases they refer to the same document. “Seaman Book” is the common name, while “Continuous Discharge Certificate (CDC)” is the official term used by flag states. Both serve as your seafarer identity and sea-service record.

Question 2

Is a CDC certificate valid in all countries?

Accepted Answer

A CDC issued by a recognised flag state — such as Panama — is accepted by shipping companies and port authorities across the UAE, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the Bahamas, and Europe. Always confirm the requirements of the specific flag and vessel you plan to join.

Question 3

How long does it take to get a continuous discharge certificate?

Accepted Answer

Processing times vary by flag state and how complete your documents are. Applying through an experienced agency, such as for a Panama Seaman Book, is usually the fastest way to avoid delays and rejected paperwork.

Question 4

Does a CDC certificate expire?

Accepted Answer

Yes. A CDC has a validity period set by the issuing authority and must be renewed before it expires. You should also keep it updated with every signing-on and signing-off entry throughout your career.
