The STCW renewal timeline: when to start
Six months before expiry — start here. This is the point at which you have every option open: choice of centre, choice of dates, and room to schedule around a contract. Book now and renewal costs you a few days ashore.
Three months before — booking gets tight. Approved centres in the UAE and India fill up around crew-change peaks. If you need PST, FPFF, AFF and PSCRB together, you are looking at several days of training that must fit into one shore window.
One month before — plan for paperwork, not just courses. New certificates may need to be reflected on your flag endorsement, and some employers want updated copies in the crewing system before they will confirm you for a vessel.
Expiry day — there is no grace period. An expired STCW certificate is not “nearly valid”. You are non-compliant from the date on the certificate, you cannot legally sign on, and port state control treats missing or expired safety training as a serious deficiency against the vessel.
After expiry — the cost changes shape. The refresher course itself is usually still available, but the real cost is the contract you could not take. In some cases, if a certificate has been expired long enough or your administration requires it, you may be told to sit the full original course rather than the shortened refresher — which is more days and more money.
What you need to renew your STCW certificates
Requirements vary by training center and administration, but almost every renewal asks for the same core set:

Renewing STCW from the UAE and the Gulf

STCW renewal vs certificate of competency revalidation
These are two different things, and conflating them is a common cause of a rejected application.
STCW renewal is course-level: you retake refresher training and get new certificates for PST, FPFF, AFF and PSCRB.
CoC revalidation is competency-level: your certificate of competency is revalidated on a five-year cycle by your administration, and generally requires proof of continued medical fitness, evidence of continued professional competence — typically sea service in the preceding five years, or an approved equivalent — and up-to-date refresher training. Your flag endorsement is then reissued and cannot outlast the CoC behind it.
In practice this means the refresher courses are usually the first step in revalidation, not a separate errand. Doing them late delays everything downstream.
